Big screen small screen medium screen no difference. They are all screens. My grandpa taught me you only need to be 10% smarter than the tool to make it work for you. Looks like you guys figured that out. Good luck. I found you on substack because I hated how much I mindlessly scrolled instagram. Now I stop and read and learn and take time to comment. Thank you. Look forward to hear how your life changes.
That’s awesome. Big believer in using tools with intention—whether it's a screen, a watch, or a pair of shoes. It’s easy to let them run you instead of the other way around. Stoked you found us on Substack and that it’s adding something real to your day. Appreciate you being here, taking the time to read, think, and engage. Keep us posted on what shifts for you.
I've only ever owned a "dumb" phone for exactly these reasons (plus I really like being about the only person I know who can navigate solely with paper maps). They're dangerous and I'm neither smart nor disciplined enough to avoid the pitfalls. Even being limited to a computer can result in way more wasted time and energy than I'd like. Good luck!
Respect. There’s something pretty awesome about keeping it simple and staying off the endless dopamine drip. Paper maps, too—that’s a real skill these days. We definitely feel the pull of screens more than we’d like, and honestly, the discipline to avoid the traps is way harder than just not having the option in the first place. Keep doing your thing!
my daily screen time was up about an hour last week and my nervous system was flooded as a result — this post has inspired me to follow suit and disconnect a bit. hope it goes well for yall!
We feel that! It’s wild how much a little extra screen time can throw things off. Good on you for noticing and making the shift—always a work in progress over here too. Hope the reset feels good!
For years I didn’t have social apps on my phone and it was great. Upon launching the ultra minute I added them back so I could stay up to date with what’s going on in the sport. Recently I’ve been feeling like I need to get back away from those apps, though. I find myself all too often reaching for my phone to mindlessly scroll and it’s a terrible feeling. Feeling inspired by y’all I’m going to uninstall them and go back to just checking via my computer. If I miss an update and don’t include it in the ultra minute, I’m sure everything will be just fine lol
That sounds like a solid move. It’s crazy how easy it is to slip into the habit of scrolling without even thinking about it. Stepping back and being more intentional with it is huge—not just for time, but for mental clarity too. And honestly, if you miss an update here or there, the world (and the sport) will keep spinning. Quality over quantity, always. We’re backing you on this one!
I recently changed my color on my phone. It’s black and white/grayscale. Makes the phone less appealing. Good luck, life without the phone is great. Have fun looking up and seeing the world.
Nice move. The less time spent glued to the screen, the better. Funny how ditching color makes the whole thing way less interesting. More time looking up, less time scrolling—seems like a win. Enjoy the real world, it’s got way better resolution anyway.
I've gone on several of these cleanses since 2020 and everytime I cut another tie to the internet. First Instagram, then Facebook about a year later, the YoutTube, and this year TikTok. I've used my phone less and less for none phone related things and as a result my anxiety is down, I spend more time Journaling, I listen to my records, and I cook more at home. Good luck to you I hope you enjoy it as much as I do
Sam gave up his girlfriend for lent too?! 😂
I also read it like this 😂
This is a reminder for us to improve our writing!!
